What is an Import Export Code (IEC)?
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a mandatory 10-digit business identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. No individual or business entity can legally import or export goods and services from India without a valid IEC.
IEC is governed by the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992 and the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) issued by the Government of India. The current FTP is the Foreign Trade Policy 2023–28.
Unlike most business licences, the IEC is a lifetime registration — once issued, it has no expiry date and requires no renewal, making it one of the most cost-effective and permanent licences a business can obtain. It is also your key to unlocking a host of export promotion incentive schemes run by the Government of India.
Great News: DGFT has made IEC registration completely paperless and online through the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in). The government fee is only ₹500, payable online. In most cases, the IEC certificate is generated digitally within the same day of application approval. JDN CORPORATE handles the entire process — you only need to provide documents and sign once.
Why Your Business Needs an IEC
Legal Global Trade
Only businesses with a valid IEC can legally import or export goods and services from India to any country.
Bank Remittance Gateway
Banks require IEC to process foreign inward and outward remittances for trade transactions (SWIFT/FEMA compliant).
Export Incentive Schemes
Access government benefits: RoDTEP, MEIS (phasing out), SEIS, Duty Drawback, Advance Authorization — all require valid IEC.
APEDA / BIS / Other Licences
IEC is a prerequisite for APEDA registration, BIS export authorizations, and most other export-related compliance licences.
Amazon, Flipkart Global
Cross-border e-commerce platforms (Amazon Global Selling, eBay India, Walmart) mandate IEC for seller onboarding.
Lifetime — Zero Maintenance
IEC never expires and requires no annual renewal, making it the most cost-effective business licence with a one-time effort.
